Spring is the time for pursuing dreams and reaching toward your goals. There’s an energy in the air as leaves unfurl and early flowers begin to bloom. It’s a time of growth.
What follows is a collection taken from my Instagram posts about pursuing dreams. Finding the persistence to follow our dreams and overcoming the challenges along the way is a theme that runs throughout my account.
I find strength and motivation in nature and use the pictures I take as inspiration for my posts. Enjoy!
Inspired by purpose
When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all of your thoughts break their bonds; your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, facilities, and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be.”
Patanjali
Find your purpose.
Find that project that consumes your thoughts and unleashes the greatness within you.
This life is short but its never too late to dream big and fulfill your purpose.
Van Gogh is refuting the myth that would have people believing that great things just happen. That the muse chooses whom to visit and the masterpiece materializes.
Rather, he says great things are the result of a series of small, maybe seemingly inconsequential, things brought together. And within the process is an implied determination and effort.
There really is nothing new under the sun. Just different ways of seeing and presenting and fitting the disparate together in new ways.
Thinking and creating are life affirming ventures regardless of whether the end result is a masterpiece, and it applies to any field of endeavor. How much effort are you willing to expend?
Dreaming and doing
Always look for another peak to climb.
I don’t ever want to say of a career or of life that I’ve reached the ‘pinnacle’. Because there’s only one way to go with this mindset. And that’s down.
If we aren’t striving and learning and growing, we’re decaying.
Always have that next peak in sight. Keep dreaming and doing. Reaching and climbing. Choose the next peak to climb.
Life exists in the challenge. What challenge is inspiring you to learn and grow?
Play your song with abandonment
“Most of us go to our graves with our song still inside us, unplayed.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes
This quote raises so many questions for us as individuals. What is our song? How do we find it? How do we free it? Or if we do know it, why are we not playing it?
This picture is a riot of color, blurry, out of focus, except for one golden leaf in the center.
Life’s like that.
Hours blur into days blur into weeks blur into months… It’s hard in the busyness of daily living to find our song and harder yet to keep playing it.
Don’t go through life having never played your song. Live in alignment with your purpose and your values. Listen to your heart dream and your song will spill out.
Find your song. Memorize it. Play it with abandon.
Your life is your story
You create your life story by the choices you make – big and small.
Some days I’d like to fire the writer or director or producer of my life. And other days, I have to squash the critic in my head because the messages are too negative, too self-limiting.
💫
But when all the roles come together anything is possible.
💫
What kind of story are you writing? Are you on script? Are you treating yourself compassionately?
💫
Your life is your story. Write it big. Write it wild. And write it imperfectly perfect!
Soar high and seize opportunity
“The higher we soar the smaller we appear to those who cannot fly.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
Don’t be tethered to the ground by those who say it can’t be done.
💫
Once in the air, the possibilities stretch in all directions.
💫
From the ground, the object that is flying is barely discernible, and the vastness of the landscape that lies below cannot be seen.
💫
It’s okay if people misunderstand and you appear diminished. Because unless they fly with you, they can’t see the world as you do.
💫
Soar high.
Chart your course with the wisdom of your future self
“Let the hindsight of your future self become the foresight of your present self.”
Shane Parrish
When you envision where or who you want to be in 1 month, 6 months, a year, 10 years, what navigational advice does your future self give you?
💫
If you could go into the future and chart backwards the course you took to even one month out, what would you see?
💫
What new learning, mindset, or attitude helped you make the most progress on sunny days with perfect winds?
💫
Which ones carried you through the storms and doldrums? Cultivate those mindsets today.
Embrace the learning that gives you vision and clarity.
Trim your sails and chart the course that gives you the best chance of getting to where you want to be.
💫
Study your route ahead of time, anticipate challenges and revel in the growth that will come.
💫
Know that if you start with a clear picture of what the journey could hold, you’ll be better able to navigate all waters successfully.
💫
Create a plan based on the hindsight of your future self!
Create an action plan
Do you have dreams, goals, aspirations? Are you actively pursuing them?
Our actions reflect our priorities. Goals worth pursuing don’t happen overnight and they don’t happen by chance. It takes hard work and perseverance.
💫
What aspirations do you have? How are you pursuing those aspirations? What’s your action plan?
💫
You can do this. One step at a time.
Don’t let fear limit you
Don’t miss out on climbing the mountain because you’re scared to cross the river. Stay focused on your goals and don’t let your fears limit you.
Fear anesthetizes us so we can’t even recognize what it is that sets our soul on fire.
Sometimes it’s what we fear the most that our soul longs for. What elicits the most excuses? What elicits the imposter syndrome, or the too ‘old’, too ‘young’ card. Be fearless and pursue what sets your soul on fire!
Paddle in the direction of your dreams
Kayaking is perfect for wandering and dreaming.
The only sound is the dip of the paddle as you glide across the water.
You are one with nature. Your destiny is in your hands as you follow where your heart leads.
This is true of life.
We choose our direction and we choose how much effort to expend as we seek our destination. We know when to dig deep and when to rest. We control how we ride out life’s storms, and whether we are aware of the beauty that surrounds us.
Paddle in the direction of your dreams.
